Why Great Loop Jargon and How to Be a Part of It

Cruising and exploring the Great Loop is a challenging and fun experience. One of the many fun aspects of setting off on this adventure is the interaction with all of the other loopers. It is the experience of most if not all of them that the best part is the community of loopers. The purpose of this blog is to record the nomenclature...the language...the jargon...of being a looper.

How to view the dictionary - click on the post with the appropriate first letter.

How to make an addition to the dictionary - Pick the appropriate first letter of the word or phrase that you wish to add and make a comment for that letter - click "Post A Comment". The entry will appear immediately but will be reviewed by the moderator. The entries will not be alphabetized. The most recent entries will be at the top.

As this is a project of an active looper and where internet connectivity is sometimes problematic additions are not automatic and make take a short while to be posted. The moderator encourages you to subscribe to this blog to see all updates as they are added to their appropriate alphabet letter blog posts.

Rules that will be enforced -

  • No cursing, profanity or use of foul language. This includes words that in the opinion of the moderator are demeaning for any reason especially having to do with gender, race, creed, national origin, cultuale, politics and age.
  • No scatological references will be allowed other than references having to do with shipboard sanitary systems and devices. (Ex. entries having to do with pump outs.)
  • Please keep your additions to jargon, colloquialisms, catch phrases and idioms rather than textbook definitions. (Ex. "docktail" OK. "waypoint" not allowed. This is a technical definition.)
  • References that are very obscure to the extent that their appreciation would be to a very small segment of the looper community, will be not posted. However the moderator is open to discussion as to the validity of the entry as to whether it should posted.
The moderator of this blog wants this to be a fun and enjoyable experience and envisions expansion of this to an open source wiki or online dictionary resource. But until then please excuse any clumsiness to this effort and most important of all...

HAVE FUN!
